“SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Microsoft Corp. and Novell Inc. are entering into a partnership that could help Novell’s Linux operating system, according to a media report Thursday. Under the agreement, which isn’t final, Microsoft will offer sales support to Novell’s Suse Linux, the Wall Street Journal reported on its Web site…”

After reading this, I figured I must be having some kind of weird dream so I went to take a cold shower and wake up… blood came out of the shower head! Just then I heard screams from outside and brimstone was raining down from the heavens. I’m going back to bed and hide under the covers.

Seriously, I had been holding out hope that Novell would take on Microsoft head to head like in the good old days when Netware was a dominant force. With their previous technologies all ported over to Linux (Netware has gone too far down the wrong path to come back) and their very strategic acquisitions in the past several years, I thought they finally had all the tools they need to compete. I even bought stock in them. My stock may go up, but not for the reasons I was hoping for. I don’t know what MS was holding over their heads; I thought the SCO vs. Linux thing was practically dead. I assume the volume of analysis of this partnership will eclipse even the release of Vista and Office 2007.

This just in: Scientists squash a little girl’s dreams

A six-year-old girl has caused a conundrum of global proportions after her attempts to send a message in a bottle to Norway ended up in New Zealand.

While on holiday with her grandparents on the north-east coast of Scotland, Keely Reid tossed a plastic water bottle into the Moray Firth in the expectant hope that the tide might carry it as far as the shores of Scandinavia.

However the girl and her family have been surprised to discover the bottle ended up travelling more than 20,000 miles in 47 days to be washed up on the beach of Whangamata on the north island of New Zealand.

I can see where the study of ocean currents is important, but the article makes it sound like the scientists were debating a six year old. While this would be amazing if true, an average speed of 18 miles per hour doesn’t seem that impossible. It seems like it would be easy enough to test too… throw some more trash in the ocean.

Apparently it’s news that Paris Hilton smokes pot. I’m just wondering if she’s going to endorse it, like she does the fashions that she wears, in order to get free weed…

I gave up on sending in rebates a long time ago. I used to send in a lot of them and I think Memorex was the only company that ever sent me my money (after about a year). Well, supposedly the FTC has cracked down a bit and things are better, but someone has come up with a way to play the system to maximize the number of customers that don’t succeed in getting their rebate.

gootube Well, I went to the trouble of tweaking the graphic, so I’ll keep it there, but “GooTube” sounds like it caters to a particular gendre of videos… Mashable! has a good summary of the rumors about Google buying YouTube. Personally I can’t see why they would do it. Going in so many directions seems to be stretching Google pretty thin, plus there seem to be a lot of people out there for whom Google has replaced Microsoft as their most hated evil empire. (Or maybe all the comments posted to every story about Google are Yahoos that are still upset that they can’t figure out how they lost so much market share so quickly.) Sucking up another popular service would just make them evil to that many more people.

NoteMesh looks like a great new application for Wikis. It allows students to contribute to a common set of class notes. Everyone in the class can view, add, or edit the same notes. I can see a lot of potential for this site, but like all user driven content sites, it’ll suck without an active user base. I imagine the first people to go to a site like this are the ones who slept through class rather than the ones who went and took good notes.

As you can see from the graph, Firefox leads IE in vulnerabilities for the first half of the year. What it doesn’t show is that most Firefox bugs were fixed within 24 hours.

There are unpatched bugs in IE that Microsoft has known about for years.
